Biography   Charles Showalter

An illustrator in Chicago employed by Haddon Sundblom, Charles R. Showalter worked on many of the signature works associated with Sundblom such as the Coca Cola ads of the 1940s and 50s.  Specifically he did the 1948 images of "woman-talking-to-baseball-player" and "family at soda fountain", the 1949 image of a young woman talking on the telephone, and young woman with a writing tablet.  Showalter painted those illustrations directly for the Coca Cola Company whose headquarters were in Atlanta, Georgia, and his model was Helen Olson, whom he described as "my favorite model.  She was the ideal-girl type.  She had good features, good animation, and I could painter her as a blond, brunette or redhead."
