Christina Quarles (born 1985) is a contemporary American artist living and working in Los Angeles whose gestural, abstract paintings confront themes of racial and sexual identities, gender, and queerness. Quarles was born in 1985 in Chicago, IL. In 1991 she moved with her mother to Los Angeles, CA where she continues to live and work.
After attending the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), Quarles earned a BA in art and philosophy from Hampshire College in 2007, and later an MFA in Painting from the Yale School of Art in 2016. In the same year, Quarles also completed a residency at the Skowhegen School of Painting and Sculpture.
The titles of her work often allude to a written and spoken vernacular.
