Frederick R. Cross was active/lived in Kansas, Illinois.

Biography   Frederick R. Cross

Studied at Kenyon College.  Worked as a commercial artist and director of advertising for a Chicago corporation.  Became interested in fore-edge painting on books and mastered the art by discovering the precise kind and consistency of watercolors and inks, finding and making the special pens and brushes required, and developing a clamp to hold the books while being painted. He adorned a number of books in his own collection and occasionally accepted commissions.
