Schlicht was born on December 27, 1886 in Wladykino, Russia to Oskar Schlicht, a German engineer and Sophia Galjatina, a descendant from a Russian aristrocratic family. Already in 1911 he participated (with Mussatov, Malevitsh, and others) in an exhibition in Saint Petersburg. Because of his German ancestry, he was interned in 1915 and expelled from Russia in 1918.
