Biography Gideon Sandelin
Gideon Sandelin (1914-1990)
He was a mid-20th century American oil painter who produced and sold over 100 canvases from the 1940s to the 1960s. Sandelin grew up in the tri-state area of Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin, born to Finnish immigrants, and inherited the traditionally-Finnish skill of woodworking. In fact, Sandelin would work as a carpenter and cabinet maker most of his life.
In the Depression-era 1930s, he made his way to California where he worked as a field hand and sign painter. A first generation Finnish-American, Sandelin also inherited the leftwing politics of the many Finns who immigrated to the U.S., escaping persecution in their pro-Czarist, anti-Soviet, and later pro-fascist homeland.
