Harry Pettit was born on February 26th, 1867 in Rock Island Illinois. At a young age he had a position as a staff artist for his hometown daily newspaper, the "Rock Island Argus". In 1890 he married Susie Stoddard and moved to New York City where he worked as an interior decorator. Later the couple divorced and in Paris, he married Margaret Hoecker, who became his business manager.
Eventually, Harry Pettit did most of his work as a painter for large industrial plants such as steel plants and railroad yards. Many of his subjects are of New York City architecture and include The Hudson Terminal Buildings; The Metropolitan Life
