Jack Califano was born in Connecticut on Jan. 17, 1890, one of 12 sons of artist John Califano. Jack learned to paint in his father's studio. He was a father-figure to his younger brother, Eugene. Searching for a milder climate, the brothers settled in Los Angeles in 1924 where they eked out a modest living. Jack Califano never married and died there on April 10, 1981. His rare portraits and landscapes were done with a palette knife.
