Biography James Queen
A native Philadelphian, James Queen began his career as an artist and
lithographer at the age of fourteen, serving as apprentice to George
Lehman and P.S. Duval. He honed his skills as a draftsman and continued
his professional relationship with Duval, who referred to him in a
letter "as one of the best artists in the country."
His genre scene,
capturing the Delaware River in front of the old Navy Yard at Southwark
during the coldest winter on record, shows the adeptness for composition
and the keen attention to detail for which Queen was known.
