Portraitist and landscape painter, Lillian Thomas Schmidt was born in New York City, New York, in 1875. After her early education there, she studied fine art at several New York studio schools including the Art Students League where she perfected a unique approach and identifiable style especially in her depictions of American landscapes which were often accentuated by the use of human and animal figures to reinforce perspective and create a modest, sometimes mysterious narrative element into each work.
