Maria Margaretha la Fargue (1743–1813) was the only woman in a family of painters from The Hague.
She had four older brothers. She learned to
draw and paint from her brothers Paul Constantijn la Fargue (1729–1782) and Jacob Elias la Fargue (1735–1778/98). Her brothers specialised in city scapes, while Maria Margaretha painted genre pieces: scenes from
everyday life, mostly mothers and their children.
Maria Margaretha was particularly religious and wrote poems and prose. Along with her
brothers, she worked in a family workshop where they created prints and illustrations for books.
Maria Margaretha, who never married, had a
