The following, submitted January 2005, is from Berta Pettis, whose husband's great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Fancher.
Mary Elizabeth Fancher was born November 20, 1847 in Elmira, New York. She married William Henry Pettis in 1868 and died in 1930 in San Ansolmo, California. She crossed the plains in a covered wagon at the age of 16, going from Rockford, Illinois to Napa, California. The trip took from April to August 1863.
We have the original letter she wrote to her friend, Emma of Elmira, NY upon her arrival in California. The letters describe everything her family encountered on the trip, including the attacks by Indians and sickness. Among paintings in our possession is one that she sketched (and later painted) whil
