Mattie Calhoun Shelton was born in Tennessee on Nov. 25, 1851. Mattie was the wife of Wm T. Shelton, pastor of the Fresno Christian Church. By the 1880s she was a resident of Fresno and active in the local art scene. She helped organize and served as first president of the Art Circle. In her studio she taught painting to small classes of women. She died in Berkeley, CA on Aug. 27, 1924.
