Michael was appointed court painter and art teacher for Queen Elena. While painting war scenes a the Austrian front, Michael lost his hearing. In l922, upon arriving in New York, he was detained at Ellis Island due to his deafness. While waiting, he painted the portrait of a Dutch girl aboard the S.S. Duilio. His talent was recognized and he was admitted. Shortly thereafter he acquired portrait commissions to paint President Coolidge, Rudolph Valentino. Charles Lindbergh and later Wendell Wilkie, Franklin D.Roosevelt, etc. His portraits in Italy included Guglielmo Marconi, Francesco Matarazzo and Mussolini.
