Biography Paul Philippe
After studying at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin Paul Philippe moved in 1900 to Paris, where continuing his education as a student of Antonin Larreux. His sculptures, which were initially committed to the Art Nouveau and later the Art Deco, he presented from 1902 to 1909 regularly in the salons of the Société des Artistes Français. Because of their expensive materials Philippe's works were popular with the French bourgeoisie.
With ease, the figure offered poised einfüssig to play her flute while the ivy wreath evokes associations with a bacchante in her hair. The head and legs of the sculpture are made of precious ivory, her clothes made of fine wood. The combination of various precious materials was a main feature of art deco.
