Robert Lewis La Hotan, 75, painter and teacher, died of natural causes Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. La Hotan was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, on April 8, 1927, to John Melvin La Hotan (born Janos LeHoten, from Bohemia, Czechoslovakia) and Edythe Cox. He grew up in Western Massachusetts before coming to New York City to study painting. La Hotan was a graduate of Columbia University and a student of Meyer Schapiro. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945 and 1946.
