Biography Salvatore Petruolo
Salvatore Petruolo (1857-1946) was a student of Gabriele Smargiassi at the Academy of Fine
Arts in Naples. He is recorded for his wide range of coastal landscapes
in the surroundings of Naples and some from Calabria. His landscapes
from 1875 to 1898 show the influence of the School of Posillipo and
Edoardo Dalbono. Thereafter, his paintings feature symbolist elements.
His studio in Naples was visited by famous personalities, such as
Emperor Frederick III, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess
Louise, the sister of King Edward of England. Today, works by Petruolo
are on display in major museum collections, including the Museo
Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples.
