Walid Abu Shakra, Israeli, born in 1946, active in England
Walid Abu Shakra was born in Umm el-Fahm. He dropped out of high school to help support the family but signed up for art classes in Hadera. In 1967, he began to study at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. His early paintings featured geometric abstraction, inspired by Oriental decorative art.
In the mid-1970s, he moved to London, where he studied etching techniques. From the 1970s, he made etchings of landscapes based on photographed images.
Among his best-known works are the etching Landscape of my Village (1975) and his series of Mintarat al-Batten landscapes.
