Biography Francis Adolf Van der Wielen
A Dutch artist who became an art instructor in Philadelphia in the
1870s, Francis Van der Wielen was an influence on Cecilia Beaux, who
took lessons at his school for women in 1872 when she was age
sixteen. Beaux recalled him "as a good-looking yet somber young
man with a ruddy complexion, a mass of auburn hair, a full beard, and a
strong accent." (Carter 37)
At that time, his eyesight was deteriorating, and teaching was his financial salvation.
He was trained at the Antwerp Academy of the Arts, and using this
classical training in his classes, had his students draw from the
antique and master perspective and value.
