Monsen attended a school for young artists in Oslo.

He immigrated to the United States at age 16 and first lived in Chicago, Illinois, where his family immigrated later. He worked in the woods in Minnesota, followed harvest season into the Dakotas, and went farther west to Montana, working as a ranch hand, sheep herder, ran a pack train supplying food and necessities for isolated families in the mountain regions.
