Friedrich Schroder-Sonnenstern

Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern (1892-1982)

The artist devoted himself to drawing only late in life.  In 1933 he met the expressionist painter Hans Ralfs, who inspired him to create his first drawings. However he only began to draw intensively after World War II.

Schröder-Sonnenstern's works show erotic and dreamlike imagery with bizarre creatures, often hybrids of man and beast.  He continuously takes up recurring motifs, meticulously drawn in bold colors.  In the early 1950s a gallery organized the artist's first show, the surrealist exhibition in Paris in 1959 celebrated him as the most sensational artist of the 20th century, numerous international exhibitions followed.
