One of the earliest Caucasian artists known to have worked in Santa Fe, George Stanley was called 'Professor' because he seemed so 'professional' as an artist. It is thought he came from Colorado before he set up a studio in Santa Fe in 1897 and advertised he would "fill orders for watercolors or oil paintings at his present studio." (18) He lived in a Mrs. Goodwin's boarding house on lower Palace Avenue and exhibited paintings of New Mexico genre and landscape at Seligman Bros. store.
A Santa Fe newspaper of December 22, 1897 announced a Seligman exhibition and described Professor Stanley as "an artist of much ability, and his sketches of Indians and Mexican life, because of their trueness to nature and perfectness in coloring ... Displaying 750 of 1237 characters.
