After 20 years service with the royal family, Schmitt and his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1892. Settling in Ewansville, NJ (outskirts of Philadelphia), he operated the Maple Lane Cottage until 1920. In that year the Schmitt family moved to California and settled in Fruitvale near Oakland.
