An academic painter from France, Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp made regular winter trips to New Orleans beginning 1831. There he painted elegant portraits in neo-classical style of prominent persons who reflected the wealth of the Creole community.

Joseph Jean Vaudechamp (1790-1866) was a French painter of the 19th century, born in the department Vosges in the north-east of Paris. He was a pupil of Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson. His works were exhibited in the Paris up from 1817.
At the beginning of the 1830s Vaudechamp went to New Orleans, USA to take his chance. He specialized in portraits there and became a popular portrait painter in Louisiana. (msc)
