The son of French artist Henriette Amiard and American painter George Oberteuffer, Karl Oberteuffer was born in Le Croisic, France and attended elementary school in Paris. At the age of ten, he moved with his family to the United States, settling in Chicago. In 1925, Oberteuffer enrolled at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. While a student there, he received an honorable mention in 1927 and the S. S. Peabody Prize in 1928.
Following his graduation in 1928, Oberteuffer became an art instructor and taught at the Memphis Academy of Art in Tennessee during the 1930s, and then at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston during the 1940s and 1950s.
