Biography photo for Karl Amiard Oberteuffer
The son of French artist Henriette Amiard and American painter George Oberteuffer, Karl Oberteuffer was born in Le Croisic, France and attended elementary school in Paris.  At the age of ten, he moved with his family to the United States, settling in Chicago.  In 1925, Oberteuffer enrolled at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago.  While a student there, he received an honorable mention in 1927 and the S. S. Peabody Prize in 1928.

Following his graduation in 1928, Oberteuffer became an art instructor and taught at the Memphis Academy of Art in Tennessee during the 1930s, and then at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston during the 1940s and 1950s.  A beneficiary of New Deal arts initiatives, he produced post office murals in MacKenzie, Tennessee in 1938 and in Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1943.  Solo exhibitions soon followed at prestigious venues, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery  of Art (1941); Whitney Museum of American Art; and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In addition to these successes, Oberteuffer was represented by two of the foremost New York galleries of American art, Milch and Macbeth galleries, where he also had solo shows.

Oberteuffer was primarily known for his work in watercolor that depicted scenes of France and Germany, and, in America, of New Orleans and New England, notably Gloucester, Massachusetts and Boothbay Harbor, Maine.  He worked from life and attempted to portray a particular moment in time.  Over the years, his style evolved from an impressionist orientation concerned with light effects to a more modernist approach.
