Biography from the Archives of askART

Mary Flournoy Passailaigue (b. 1908-d.1989)

Born in Columbus, Georgia, Mary Flournoy's early interest in art was encouraged by her mother, a painter.  Like Nell Choate Shute, she studied at Hollins College, Roanoke, Virginia; she also studied at the Atlanta School of Art and St. Simon's Art School.  Significant teachers included Wayman Adams, Edward S. Shorter, Walter W. Thompson, Frank S. Herring, William Hendrix, Don Kingman, Eliot O'Hara, Millard Sheets, and Joel Reeves.

An active member of the Columbus art community,  Passailaigue played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Columbus Museum.  Among her many achievements, Passailaigue was honored as one of the first female artists to be inducted into the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York City.  She died in Columbus, in the same room of the same house in which she was born.

As a result of her marriage to Jack Passailaigue, the artist traveled widely: "The couple honeymooned in Cuba establishing a love for travel, which lasted for the duration of their lives together." During their travels, Passailaigue brought paints, sketchpads, brushes, and volumes of watercolor paper.  She painted in Mexico, South America, the West Indies, Hawaii, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, England, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Ireland, Dubrovnik, Iran, and Greece.  Her obituary stated that "…her numerous impressionist paintings have captured scenes in nearly every part of the world."
