Glendening painting question
Carl (10/07/2014)
I have a AA Glendening paining that is called "Trout Stream" that has what looks like a child in the water fishing, and a black & white collie and appears a adult on the bank. Can't find anything online about it. Any ideas? Thanks

AA Glendening Jr painting
Davis (12/13/2013)
I recently acquired a painting/watercolor by Alfred Augustus Glendening Jr. It is a landscape with 3 trees and is approximately 10 x 7 inches. It is signed and dated 1898 in the lower left corner. The location and date is written on the back side. I can't make out the first word...Al???????? N.Wales 1898. The painting is attached at the top to a harder piece of material. The backside of this piece is signed Alfred Augustus Glendening Jnr. 1898. I would welcome any information or comments concerning this painting.

A.A.Glendening, Capel Curig N. Wales
Stephen Roughton (03/04/2013)
I have an original oil which is identified bdneath the painting by: "A.A.Glendenig, Capel Curig N Wales" and "Ex: R.A. 1879". This landscape scene is of a river flowing over rocks (centre), with a white cottage/black roof (far right) and stone wall with a centred wooden gate ( far left). Between the gate and the river there is a standing woman holding a watter vessel (standing) and, beside her, filling a water vessel, a kneeling man. A little beyond the man there is a dog which appears to be looking at the man. The painting is set in a valley with lush forest and a mountain/hill in the background. Winthin the frame the painting measures 35 1/2" x 23 1/2". In the lower right corner the painting is signed (dark red) as follows: "A. A. G. 79.80". The oainting is in excellent condition. I have no idea of what its value is. In addition, I have two signed Glendening oil paintings measuring 9 1/2" x 15 1/2" (within the frame). Detail regading these will be the subject of a subsequent posting, depending on the response I receive from this one. I note that Capal Curig is featured in another Glendening oil discovered during my Google search.

It it still widely assumed that Alfred Glendening (1861-1907)bore the same name as his father, Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1910). However the record for his birth in 1861 shows that he was named Alfred Illman Glendening and it was under this name that he married Ruth Fryett in 1888. (His mother was a Sophia Illman, hence his middle name).

Alfred Glendening

Below is a post I filed on Ask Art back in 2008. I continue to research Alfred Glendening Senior and Junior. Please do contact me if you have ANY information on them, their family or contacts. Also please make contact if you have an original painting by either of them as I now have a lot of information on their works and know quite a lot about both artists too (although I remain very keen to know more). I cannot comment further on the prints to which most contributers to this board refer beyond what I said in 2008. In good condition the harvesting prinyts now fetch about $100 top $200 these days on ebay or elsewhere. Condition is important. The original paintings are very different though. I paid many thousands of dollars for an original and particularly fine painting by Junior recently, which I found privately. Through a dealer it would have been a serious amount of money. MY PREVIOUS POSTING 05/31/2008 David Coulthard Harvesting Print The picture many of you have asked about in this discussion column showing a harvest scene with a cart led by a white horse and a scene down to a river below is a print issued, by all accounts a long time ago, mostly in the US and it was obviously very popular. As there are a large number of copies of this particular print around it does not have a large value - perhaps a couple of hundred dollars or thereabouts if in good condition. Note: The original is not by Alfred Glendening Junior but by hs father Alfred Glendening senior. I have been studying the father's paintings for some time now and have never come across the original painting going through a salesroom or with a dealer. Who knows where it might be? Might I suggest that if you have a landscape, oil on canvas painting without a pretty girl in it there is every liklihood you have SENIOR's work. If you have a watercolour or oil on canvas or board showing a pretty young lady in Victorian dress by the gate of a pretty cottage, picking flowers or similar there is every likelihood you have JUNIOR'S work I am no expert on Junior's work but I do know a lot about Senior. I am particularly interested to discover more about Alfred Glendening senior at the moment but plan to research Junior later on.

David Kundtz (05/11/2009)
I inherited a Glendening (senior) oil painting, approx 24" wide x 12" high signed in lower left and with a plaque on a very ornate frame with the words "On the Conway / A. A. Glendening" It depicts a man fishing on a river and the surrounding countryside. Can anyone give me some info? Location of the Conway River? Thanks.

A Cornfield, Kent (1865)
John Morgan (12/29/2008)
A reproduction of this painting by A.A.Glendening (presumably Snr.) is used on the cover of 1983 Oxford Paperbadk edn. of 'The Life of the Fields' by Richard Jefferies. As a Kentish resident, I wonder if anyone can cast any light on the location of the view depicted in this painting. Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Where is the original harvest scene watercolor? I cannot find a copy of the same scene anywhere I have looked. Mine is 48 X 24 (approx.) Slightly faded with a few spots or smears where water has splashed on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am wondering why some of us have pictures with only one man in the field and others state there are three. Did anyone find out any further information about this?

A.A. Glendenning - Picking Poppies
Geraldine Watson (06/21/2008)
I too have copy of this picture which, while it looks like a painting, clearly is not. I was told when I bought it that it's an oleograph.

AA Glendenning Dates
Angela (06/07/2008)
Confused by death dates as my grandfather accepted paintings in payment of a debt in 1916 when he was down on his luck. He was living in Greenwich/deptford. It had to be after 1912 as one of the reasons he took the pictures was that my Nana loved those of scotland and they did not know each other till then.

I have 1900 print and the colors are still vibrant and in good condition. I liked the information from David Coulthard regarding the Harvesting Print.

AA Glendening 1900 Landscape
Karen (05/25/2008)
This is the same picture that everyone else is talking about with the men "shocking wheat". My grandmother's picture (2'x4') has hung in her dining room most of my life. It is very faded (or it may have tobacco smoke on it from my great-grandfather's pipe). How can we make the colors more vivid or could this be from shellac over the picture? Thank you so much.

AA Glendening Jr. "Picking Poppies"
Lisa (05/10/2008)
I have a framed picture done by AA Glendening Jr. called "Picking Poppies" that was given to me years ago by my mother and father. Am I to assume that this is an original painting? It is definitely not a print but since I'm not an expert in this field I would like to be sure. It is framed so I cant really look on the back etc. It's a beautiful picture. Any input would be appreciated. Thank You

robert (01/16/2007)
I recently acquired a Gellman print with the same description.(team of horses, one brown, one white...) On the back of the print it has No:627 size 16" x 20" A.A. Glendening " Harvest Time". Does the 627 refer to a series of prints by Gellman, or to a #'d litho? Do you know how many prints of this painting were made?

Just wondering if anyone found anything out about the painting of the wheat wagon with the guy on it and the three guys in the field? I as well aquired one of these pieces of art and love it. Please let me know. It has been in our family since around 1910.

AA Glendening painting - 1871
Will LeVett (12/02/2006)
I have a painting by AA Glendening w/the date of 1871. This would have made him ten years old when he painted this... does that sound right? It's a beautiful painting of a hill side with cattle and a few people.

Dorothy Acosta (11/03/2006)
I have a painting by AA Glending in a very old frame. The title of the painting is fadedd, but as best I can make out it is "An Haslyn on the Wales" I would like to ascertain whether I am reading this title correctly and if not what the correct title might be. It is a picture of a small wooden bridge over water with cottages with thatched roofs on both sides and mountains in the background.

lucas (08/07/2006)
My mother left a painting for me on her passing about 25 years ago. It is 47"x 23". It is two horses pulling a wheat or grain wagon that looks to be full. A man is sitting on top; there are three other men who are working on the ground. There is a house in the background along with a body of water, probably a river, with a bridge. Would you have any information on this? Thanks, Lucas

Jackie Hoover (05/09/2006)
I am looking for more information on a painting, maybe a lithography because it is not in colo. It is framed like his on "Spring". It is titled "Idle Moments". There are two girls, one sitting on a bench, one standing, a dog, all in a garden with a bird bath and birds. Dated 1902. Anything anyone can tell me about this work would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jackie

Is there a Photo Of Alfred Glendening
April Paulin (03/26/2006)
I am trying to find out if this artist is any kin of mind. My maiden name is Glendening and my brother was the former governor of Maryland, (Parris Glendening). I am researching our family tree and was surprised to see this man's name come up. Any input is extremely appreciated.

Alfred Glendening watercolor
Lana Barber (03/16/2006)
I have an original Alfred Glendening watercolor that is 24" x 36". I inherited it from my grandmother. It is dated 1899. I am not sure what the signature is, but I was told by a fine arts dealer in New York that it is a painting by Glendening. I just don't know if it is by Sr. or Jr. How do you tell?

A A Glendening Snr
David Coulthard (02/19/2006)
I am researching the work of Alfred Augustus Glendening Snr (1840-1910) and so far have collected over 100 photo images of his works. In his lifetime it is likely he will have painted over 500 paintings. Some will have been lost over time but I am keen to see photo/jpeg images of any that people have to build up my knowledge. In every case I am keen to know of any dates of particular images. In time I may write a catalogue of his work. He did also have a son with exactly the same name (1860 - 1907) so do be careful not to get confused between them. David
