Landscape Probably from Wiscasset MaineCaroline
My mothers Swedish aunt had an antique shop in Wiscasset, ME -- Likely from about 1935-ish through 1960-ish. I have a beautiful landscape painting in the original frame which given that it came from my great Aunt must be from his time in Wiscasset. Such fun to find this site!
J Shelton Ship at Sea oil paintingSteve
I inherited this painting from my grandmother. It's been in my family for 30 or 40 years. I've seen at least 20+ other pictures of his paintings on line and I think I must own his most dramatic scene at sea of a large clipper stlye 3 mast ship with sails full of wind cutting through the waves while sea gulls race along its side at deck height. Anyone out there familiar with this painting? Canvas approximately 2'w x 3' tall. Its awesome.

I noticed in the South Boston branch of bank of America ( formerly South Boston Savings bank) there is about 7 or eight large paints of various revolutionary war scenes , mainly Henry Knox and his train of artillery , depicted at Dorchester heights and along the route from Fort Ticonderoga

I am interested in finding out more about a painting signed by Aplhonse Shelton titled "West Coast North Atlantic". It is 5'x 3'. Thank you.
There is a lovely seascape hanging in the offices at the the Mars candy plant in Oak Park, IL. One of the associates there told me that the painting was purchased by a member of the Mars family.

Great nephewAnthony Palermo
Alphonse J. Shelton was my great uncle and was a wonderful artist in my opinion from an unbiased standpoint. His sister (my grandmother), Gretchen S. Sanderson was an accomplished artist in her own right, teacher, and writer.
Most of Alphonse’s work was done is New England, primarily Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire. I believe he had a number of pieces in various galleries in Boston decades ago, and I'm sure there are still some great works in the storage rooms of those galleries somewhere. His true love was the sea; however, my parents have one of the few landscapes that he produced, which exudes detail in its simplicity. I have a beautiful seascape entitled "Southeasterly" in one of his gorgeous handcrafted frames. However, one of my dearest possessions is a photograph of him painting the ship Bowdoin which hangs at Bowdoin College in Maine still I believe.
I welcome any information to learn more about him, though.

The one painting I own of his is stamped on the back of the frame: Alphonse J. Shelton, Wiscasset, Maine. Is this typical of his other works. It is also signed A. Shelton on the front of the painting. Are there examples of his work while he was living in New Hampshire?
