Eaton Oil PaintingStephen Fell
My Grandmother left to me a painting signed Chas Warren Eaton. It's in perfect condition. After reading a bit about Eaton and the Tonalism style I would love to know where my painting fits into his life. It's a very peaseful landscape with pasture, hills, trees and a small town emerging from the distant woods with a blue and clouded sky. The colors are what we would see if we were standing there -not at all the dark subdued colors that I've been seeing in the examples on the site here. The scene looks to be more of a New England or North Eastern rural scene.
Would this pre date the Tonal style or after?
I would love to hear any feedback.
Thanks a lot

My grandfather (who lived in Summit, N.J.)had a dark, rather gloomy painting in his living room which was passed on to me a number of years ago. The painting has always been a family joke and never advanced beyond a guest bedroom. I was looking at it closely yesterday and read the artist's name which is Charles Warren Eaton. That led to this web-site and my surprise to see that Mr. Eaton was rather famous. His painting will receive better care from now on. I have no idea what the painting title is. It appears to be from his early era. Does anyone know how to find out more about it?
