Chief Spotted Elk (aka Chief Big Foot) of Wounded Knee 1890
Calvin Spotted Elk (04/05/2013)
Henry Cross allegedly painted my great great grandfather. I'd like to correspond with someone familiar with the details of this particular painting. I've seen a postcard which labels him as a Hunkpapa (He was Minneconjou) but which states he was the leader of those killed at Wounded Knee. I'd like more details please... if someone would be kind enough to contact me. Thank you. Calvin

Connecting to Roots
Kelly Lee Davidson (08/22/2011)
My grandfather was Richard M. Cross. My mother and aunts have spent a lot years admiring their heritage through a deep understanding given to them by their father. I can see from this forum that my great, great, grandfather touched by brushstroke were not just his families. My mother has collected a small room full of information for herself and sisters in hopes of discovering a deeper connection to her roots. I think that one of the greatest gifts I could give her are the little pieces of the puzzle, the pieces that she does not already know through correspondence with the extended family she is aware of. Sometimes unveiling the tiniest bit of history gives the old world we live in a new meaning. At some point I intend to honor the random pieces of the past that I have gathered and give them to my mother and aunts when the time is right. I would love to start corresponding with anyone who has been touched by her great-grandfathers passion for capturing the great moments of life and welcome even the smallest tales.

Henry H. Cross
Thomas (Tom) Cross Theobald (02/21/2010)
Henry Cross was my great great uncle. My mother was a Cross (thus my middle name). I know a little about Henry, but would like to learn more and would be happy to correspond. My cousin David Cross met Stastia in the 1970's when he was researching Henry, but David passed away several years ago. Would be interested in any books done or in progress on Henry. Russell (10/23/2005)
I have a large scrap Book that Stastia Cross made (H.H.Cross Daughter) while she traveled throughout the western US with her dad. It spans many years and is full of photographs of her father, letters from Buffalo Bill, stamped, signed documents. It even includes the LAST sketch H.H. Cross did just before he passed away, as Stastia's hand written notes describe. So many one of kind, never before seen items its like a story book of all they did, and friends they had. I am happy to share knowledge if anyone has questions about it. Russell

Chief Tall Bull By H.H. Cross
Anthony Littlewhirlwind (07/03/2005)
I'm a direct descendant of Chief Tall Bull, Cheyenne Chief. Leader of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. H.H. Cross had met my great great great grandfather on the great plains in 1860s. It must have been an extraordinary encounter for Cheyenne Chief Tall Bull to allow a stranger to paint him. I like to correspond with a family descendant of H.H. Cross.
