Cigi (11/26/2009)
I have this art that I received when I was two yreas old. My mother bought it from a yard sale to hang in my room. I am now 25 years old and I still have the art hanging in my room. The picture has the title of it(A Bone To Pick) down in the left hand corner and it is signed (J. Knowles Hare) down in the right hand corner. I was just curious about it and thought I'd look for information based on the artwork. If anyone has any feedback about it I would love to hear from you. Thanks A Bunch!

The signature is j.knoweles hare.(The emossing covers the last couple of letters of the last name)the painting looks as it was done first then the paper was embosed so that she sits inside an oval. to her upper right is an embossed parrot on a swing and the same in the lower left . Any help on this picture ? it is not a print but a painting. maybe water color. and out side of the embossing is a soft grey background.

J Knowles Hare vs. J Knowles Hare Jr.
david (01/26/2007)
Does anyone know if these are the same person? It may be a brother or in later years, he just did not sign with the jr anymore. Also, I am collecting his fox terrier prints. Was a book ever written about him? Does he have family still alive now? I wonder if the boy with the dog in many of his pictures is his son [*] if the son is still alive? thanks, for all and any info.

J. Knowles Hare artwork
Margot Strongitharm (07/03/2006)
I inherited from an elderly aunt a picture of a dark-haired young woman in a floor-length orange gown (side view), holding a baby in a white christening gown. I assume that it is a print, as at the bottom is the inscription "copyright 1910" and beneath that "J. Knowles Hare". It is in very good condition, not faded or damaged, and is in a very old, ornate frame, matted in beige with a black border, and fronted by glass. On the paper backing, which is crumbling, is the number 6788. Due to the condition of the paper backing, I have not tried to remove it to see what is on the back of the picture. Can anyone tell me anything about this picture; i.e. the name of the picture, what it was produced for, etc. I assume from Mr. Hare's biography that it was done prior to his Saturday Evening Post covers.

two artists named Hare
Norm Platnick (04/13/2006)
The comment by Tashia Berman about the confusion between these two artists (who were uncle and nephew) is correct, except that no piece signed John can actually be by J. Knowles Hare, as his full name (which he never used in publication) was Joseph Knowles Hare, not John.

John Knowles Hare vs. John C. Hare
Tashia Berman (05/20/2002)
FYI These are two separate artists who worked in entirely different genre. John Knowles Hare was an illustrator best known for his figures of mothers, children and animals. Many were done for calendar and print illustrations. John C. Hare worked primarily in watercolor and some oils and is best known for his seascapes, boat, harbor and New England landscape paintings. A few of these were reproduced as prints, primarily the landscape scenes.
