oarsmen at chatou enamel on copper-renoir
Donna (09/30/2014)
I am being told that renoir did not use the medium "enamel on copper". I have a piece that was sold to me as original. I questioned the seller and she insisted that it was sold as an original at an auction.there is no name except for renoir , just as in the painting. Does anyone know if he painted any enamels on copper? This piece was done in 1874. (The original painting). I have also read that he left some smaller sketches of some of his works.

Mlle. Irene Cahen d'Anvers
Amanda (03/09/2013)
I found a Renoir panting of little Irene and I have been looking around all over the web and the paintings I have seen shows her with a green background, and the one I have of her has a red background, no green at all. It shows his signature on the panting. If anyone can help. I would be very happy.

We found what appears to be a Renoir on wove paper white background, single woman with legs crossed holding orange in one hand and basket in the other. Imported by Harvey Hutter. It's all one color kind of a burnt orange, russet tone. Has anyone seen or heard of this work and can you share any info. Much appreciated.

Merchandising rights to Renoir Paintings
Stephen Micheal Talt (10/29/2011)
Copyright attaches to a work from the moment of its creation, but the copyright actually protects the expression of the idea, not the tangible physical work itself. In the case of paintings, then, the copyright remains with the copyright owner (usually the artist, unless s/he assigned his/her copyright to someone else, e.g. for a commissioned work), and does not pass on to the buyer of the painting. The artist is therefore free to reproduce photos of his/her painting even after selling the painting. In fact, in many jurisdictions, artists enjoy resale rights. If the first buyer of the artwork resells it while the copyright subsists, the artist is entitled to a portion of the sale proceeds. That was an legal abstract on this issue. The question I pose is: "Were such rights transfered with the initial sale of the painting?" Why do I ask?. I noticed "Gabrielle Avec La Chemise Ouverte" being sold on merchandise in UK? Since I sincerely think this was secretly sold out the back doors of the TMCA, present ownership may just solve this crime. Thank you for your time in reading my posts.

too many renoirs for any of them to be originals
leshawn lundy (08/12/2011)
so thrilled was i, when I discovered a owned a renoir, after carefull research here is what i know: there are over 50 people claiming to have the original, 'by the seashore, ( not posssible) owning the original that is. 2. art professional do no respond to "i own the "by the seashore painting, because there are so many 3. enjoy your art, most likely it it not original, and renoir's son jean said, that people would come to him with fakes and renoir would add a brush stroke here and there, at no charge, 4. you may research, but don't spend a dime doing so, be careful, there is a scam were you are told it is an original but you need to spend several thousand to " re-finish it to make it more valuable.

Inquiry of my painting
Sue (06/30/2010)
My grandmother passed away 2 years ago. She was 96 years old. We came across a 16X20 oil on canvas by Renior woman @ the piano. I have researched and am aware of many of these in circulation but I do question this one's authenticity. It is a copyright D.A.C. N.Y. signed by Renior in the paint with paint. It doesn't look stamped and looks just like his signing's at such prestigious Art Galary's like Chicago and many other's It's framed wood with white/gold paint and the canvas is held in with old nails. Can anyone give advice how to check into it's authenticity without being ripped off. E-mail's will be welcomed. Thanks Sue

Dan (07/30/2009)
I've seen a number of questions here about Renoir prints. Renoir limited editon works from the late 1800's can sell for quite a bit of money, but keep in mind, there are many re-prints and afters of these works. The early 1900's was the time when stamp signed Renoir prints were produced in large numbers. Without a hand signature, the prints seem to hit a ceiling in value. If a Renoir print is stamp signed from 1910 as an example, it might sell for $2500.00 to $4500.00, but if you have a 2nd or 3rd printing, it might only be worth hundreds of dollars or maybe $1500.00. Not sure how much text I can post here. If you are interested in Dali, Renoir, Picasso, Miro, Chagall, Warhol etc. Email me at:

naked lady
Denise (06/17/2008)
I was at the thrift store and saw this wonderful painting. It is a naked lady sitting and looks as if she is drying the bottom portion of her leg. The painting is so beautiful, I bought it for nine dollars with 25 percent off because it was Monday. When I got home, noticed it was signed by someone named Renoir. I am now trying to look him up because he paints beautifully. I dont know if this is real or not but even if not, it is a very nice painting. When I bought it home, I told my 23 year old daughter that I am not gay but look at this painting. Isn't is beautiful. She agree so we hung it up in the walk in closet. I first put it in the bathroom but thought maybe moisture would hurt it later on. It was in a simple wood frame. Nothing fancy. But the picture is very nice. It had a scratch on the picture so I think that is why I found it there.

Valuing Renoir works
Bret Hampton (02/19/2008)
Hi all I see many questions asking for opinions on Renoir works. I personally found two original Renoir prints, one at auction and another through a reputable art gallery. It is difficult to evaluate artwork without looking at it, especially in case of well-known ones like Renoir, who has been copied often by others as well as printed legitimately. If you feel your work may be authentic, whether original drawing, painting or lithograph, it's best to consult with an art dealer in your area. You can also contact the well-known auction houses Christies, Bonham and Butterfield or Sothebys.

Large Vase of Flowers
Daniel (06/24/2007)
I have a painting (seems to be painted not just a print)of Large Vase of Flowers by Renoir. It is paper on canvas and measures 18 x 23 inches. It appears to be in the original frame. It came from France or Germany in about 1944 (from a US soldier). Does anybody have any idea what this print might be worth or how old it might actually be? Please note I am not soliciting for the sale of this piece. Thanks.

Did Renior "fix" Renoir fakes that people brought him?
Tom Chambers (10/19/2006)
I have read that either innocent victims of fraud and/or even a flim-flam artists would come to Renoir and give him a story that they bought a painting attributed to him and that it was a fake. Renoir would feel sorry for them, touch up or rework the fake and then sign it and not charge off they went, now, with an authentic, signed Renoir. Is there any truth to this? I think I read this in his son's (Jean)biography of hm called, Renoir, My Father. I should think that his own son would know what he is talking about but I have never been able to find a similar story from any other source. Thanks.

Renoir (Child in White)
Justin (08/17/2006)
Ok, It took me quite awhile and I only found one place on the web that listed this particular painting! I wonder if you perhaps know how many were made or can you give me any information about this painting? The one I just bout at a local thrift store surely looks like an original painting and is signed. It seems as though it was on a larger palette. I really believe I have a fascinating piece here. Yhere is a label on the back of it that has an address:135 w. 10th street New York, NY. 10014 There is also a name of William Batterham on the same label. Help me in any way tou can. Thanks

Karyn Davis (05/27/2006)
I am just curious to know why someone would go to all the trouble to paint a picture and then not put their own name on it? One of my paintings is signed Renoir and the other, George Bellows. Neither of them look anything like the styles the artists are known for. I bought them for practically nothing at an auction...could the person that signed the names actually have thought that fake signatures would bring more money? This has always puzzled me..why would anyone do something so ridiculous? Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lady at the Piano
joan (03/17/2006)
How do I tell if it is an original or a copy?? It looks like an oil, but is under glass at this time. Should I take it out of the frame and be looking for somethin in particular??

Renoir "ROSES"

the girl with the watering can
Regina (12/29/2005)
I have been given a canvas painting that is signed Renoir from my grandmothers home whom recently passed. It is dusty and it is bowing from the frame(no glass). Where would I find a reputable person to restore and reframe it? I have no idea if it is authentic, but I want to have this done anyway.

Renior Pastel
Cindy Reed (11/19/2004)
I acquired an pastel by Renior...title Little Girl in White Hat. It says the surface texture of this tender pastel portrait is light and chalky and the composition is a series of overlapping curves. The colors white, peach, apricot, and pale golden brown melt into each other and into the soft green and brown background. The drawing is clear but details merely highten rather than destroy the overall effect. - It looks as if the painting is changing colors around the hat especially. Please let me k now your thoughts anyone. Thanks

L Gillespie (01/23/2003)
Pierre-August Renoir (1841-1919) was one of the first French Impressionist painters. He was also a sculptor. Renoir's paintings often depicted children, women and everyday middle-class life in France. Images of his wife and children appear in many of his works. (info from a poster in a middle-school art classroom / proper credits unavailable). I would love more info on this artist's life.
