Shalom...His favorite greeting
Redge (07/09/2007)
I know Prophet Blackmon. I feel strongly that he is one of the top living artist in the country. This is based on his age, style and life story. His new originals are quite rare, especially as he has grown older. His style is almost primitive but most describe it as folk art, because hes self taught. I've never known such a multi-dimensional individual. He's the core of expression in all aspects of his person. His work is mysterious and and honest. As a person he's some cross between entertainer and spiritual leader. His art is a mirror of his faith. It's the connection he makes to understand what he interprets as solutions to the world problems. Always animated, always fashionably stylish in his attire and strangley attractable for people who appreciate fine art and eccentric personalities. He's a guy you can meet once and never forget him. For me I feel priveledged to be allowed the opportunity to get to know him as a person as well as an artist. He said " some of us have to take time out for the young folks so they know how to live better". To see him sacrifice all the treasures possible in the world to fully express himself through art is a great feat. I believe it saved his life from the trials and tribulations he's faced over the years. Yet he smiles with open arms and welcomes the world to hear and see his message. He allowed me to spend time with him and work with him and learn from him. Hes very private and evasive about his style and details of his art but he allowed me in spite of his initial apprehension. I witnessed his spirit come alive again. He was struggling and people were literally waiting for him to die so the value of his work to triple. There are days when he has more energy than I do and he never gives up on what he believes in. He wants to serve the people unconditionally with what ever he has. It's a humbling reminder of what it means to be human. His art tells storys with colorful, fundamentally basic figures and shapes that portray his style and purpose. I believe the inspiration you find in him can only be described as his gift to us from God. For respect of his work and person I will answer questions and accept comments from anyone interested in knowing more, but only upon request. He creates museum quality art and I give it my golden star in ratings. The value of his work is steadily increasing and if you get lucky and find one you'd better hang on to it.
