Morning Melodies #934
cae (06/18/2012)
I have this painting, which is signed by R. Brownell McGrew. I purchased it at an antique store for $75.00. I too have been wondering how much it is worth. I have another painting similar, with two women, which seem to be from the same era/artist. These two women are in a living space with a blonde ringlet-curled young women playing a banjo-type instrument, sitting in a round-backed chair (Gold and Navy Blue Striped backing). The other women has dark ringlet curls and she is standing to the right of the blonde, beside a round table. Both are smiling, enjoying their time together. These are two of my favorite pieces. I would love to know more about them as well. R. Brownell McGrew was an awesome artist! I am a huge fan of this work!

Rae (03/19/2012)
After seeing postings with questions about this piece,I will share info from my research.Brownell Mcgrew was born in 1919 and died in 1994.He had daughters and he painted a series of at least 3 paintings of them in their home. They were painted in the 1950's. I have this print in an ornate gold frame and because I wanted to find the value,I began research to determine a value.I have seen this print in various Antiques stores and it's price, depending on frame and condition is $250-$375.With the economical downturn that we are in currently,I would expect the value to be a bit less. This artist is best known for his desert scenes and Native American art.

It is signed my R Brownell McGrew....there is a piece of cardboard over the back of the picture in the frame..I have not taken it off to exam the picture. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on this picture. Thank you.

Morning Melodies
Megan J (04/18/2009)
I recieved a call from my mother yesterday saying that there was a big charity rummage sale at a local church, so I met her down there. I was finished shopping and was paying at a table and looked up at the girl working behind the table and the picture on the wall behind her caught my eye instantly! I demanded instantly to know if the painting was for sale and how much. I got it for $15! Another lady working behind the table commented that she herself thought about purchasing it and researching it to see if it was an antique or collectible. So thats how I thought to research it online and found this page. I learned alot of info about it from the previous posts...thanks guys!

Morning Melodies
Charles Ryburn (01/19/2009)
My mother bought this painting at a furniture store in circa 1955. It hung over the sofa in her formal living room for many years. I now have it after her passing. I remember when Dr.s actually still made house calls, our family physician offered her 500.00 for it once. At that time the offer was like 5000.00, but she didn't sell. I've never seen another, but amazed at how many there are from reading this website.

WitchDust (09/02/2008)
This large print has hung at my great grandparents home as long as I can remember. I have photos of it over the sofa back in the 50's. I loved it so much I asked my mother for it about 15 yrs ago & finally she gave in! I'm now 50 myself & it's still my favorite picture that hangs in our living room where it will stay until my own demise. It makes me feel so very peaceful and happy to see this as it reminds me of my own mother & her sister who played the same musical instruments. I love the story the daughter of this painter provided and will cherish knowing this. My mother worked at Brown Shoe Company in TN and one of her co workers gave this to her for Christmas one year. Ours is in a dark carved frame and had a greenish tinted glass over it until a few yrs ago when we had to replace the glass when it broke during a move. I'm really interested in find the other two prints that someone mentioned. What are the names of those if anyone knows please?

Morning Melodies
Sue D (09/01/2008)
Yes there are two more pictures that go with Morning Melodies. I have, "Harmany" .But unlike the print mentioned by Pat my Morning Melodies has a lady with a Green top and pink skirt playing the piano accompanied by another woman in a Blue dress with playing the Violyn. Mine are also in there original frames. Can anyone Supply help about the third Print. I would at least like to see it.

carolyn fenton (05/08/2008)
I bought an oil painting and I don't see a signiture on the front. On the back, it reads 4198-24/30 Sunney Cottage. It resembles Thomas Kinkade's style. Regards, Carolyn Fenton

Morning Melodies
A. Evans (01/20/2008)
I was recently given 'Morning Melodies' by a cousin who collects antiques. It hung the wall in his formal dining room and when i went for Christmas it was gone. I told him i was mad at him for taking it down...and he gave it to me! He said no one else had even noticed! I re-decorated a bedroom in my house to match the style. I got online tonight to find a title for the painting and some information on it...i knew when i found 'Morning Melodies' listed that that had to be it...even without a picture available...the title is perfect!

R. Brownell McGrew Print??
Brett Andrews (10/14/2007)
Morning Melodies By R. Brownell McGrew?? I believe I have a print of “some type” of Morning Melodies. It has one woman playing the piano and the other playing a violin, beside a spiral staircase. It is on a poster board and is professionally framed with out any glass. It has a small nick and it looks like real paint has chipped off. It is signed in the lower right corner. The picture has a torn piece of brown framing paper that reads “Custom Framed by J.J. Kormann & Son, Inc., Roanoke, Frame No: 985 Size Frame: 24” x 30” it is in great condition other than the nick and it is dusty and needs to be cleaned. My question is can anyone tell me what it is and secondly is it a print or is it a real painting or some other media I have little art background? I have taken some very good photos that I could share. I appreciate your help. Kindest Regards- Brett Andrews

Morning Melodies
Jonathan Anderson (09/29/2007)
My mother has a painting / print of morning melodies. On the back of the pic it says 24/30 the it has a sticker in the shape of a shield that reads (APCO Finest quality Chicago.) The pic was removed from an abandoned house in Detroit Michigan, that was destined for the wrecking ball. My mother instantly fell head over heals in love with the pic. I found this page by doing a GOOGLE search. Any feed back on this is greatly appreciated.

Morning Melodies
Vickie Bourgeois (09/14/2007)
I have a print of Morning Melodies that belonged to my mother. It is old enough that I don't remember it ever being new. My mother got it as a hostess gift for selling "Stanley Home Products" when I was very small (1950s). I was not aware of it's name or the artist until tonight. I also did not know there were two prints that went with it. Thanks to Gail McGrew Eifrig for the details about this print. I will print that information and place it with the print I own for future reference. It may not have monetary value but it will remain a "family treasure" to me.

Morning Melodies
Pamela Batchelor (08/01/2007)
After many years of searching, I finally have my print of Morning Melodies. I would like to know the names of the two prints that went with it and if anyone has them?

Susan Edwards (02/24/2007)
My Grandmother (who is now 73) was given this framed print by her mother around 1950-51. It has hung above her bed, all these years. I fell in love with it as a child (I am now 32) and she has just given it to me to hang in my formal living room. I am so excited to have it. It is a beautiful print. I knew others must love it as well. I was so glad to come here to find information about it. Thank you Mrs. Eifrig for filling us in, it is much appreciated.

McGrew Original
Sharon Ethridge (10/05/2005)
Mac McGrew painted my portrait on a warm November day in 1962 at Shonto Boarding School (AZ)after we allowed him to photograph some of our young students. He was one of the most "genuine" people I have ever met. I would appreciate hearing from any of his family.

McGrew early years
Sharon Mullin (08/16/2005)
My mother went to art school with Mr. McGrew. She was one of his studies. I have hanging on my wall a portrait of her western clothing that she used when working as a cowhand on the ranches around Williams, Az. signed by him. This painting was done in the mid-thirties.

Morning Melodies
Gail+Bill Eifrig (08/01/2005)
As the daughter of the artist I have some information on this print. It was done at the request of a printer of calendar art between 1948 and 1953. Mr. McGrew sketched the piano in the lobby of the Mission Inn in Riverside, California, and my sister and I posed for the rough positions of the figures, though not the details or facial appearance. Many copies were printed, it was not a limited edition in any sense. Thus the principal lvalue that the print has is simply that many people are quite attached to it and find it charming. They have no monetary value that I am aware of. You may find that you are interested in later prints of my father's work that reflect his interest in Navajo Indian life. It is these works for which a strong market exists, and on which his reputation rests. Thank you for your interest. Gail McGrew Eifrig
