danny p (02/02/2014)
In the sky in my painting you have to work with the light at all different angles. Using a good camera or magnifier as winslow did so for the intricate detail he has set deep in the oil paint of his works. Especially these works he did starting with the light LIFE LINE

w homer '89 THE STORM
DANNY P (07/27/2013)

original winslow but is it winslow homer
Cindy (08/22/2011)
I purchased a beautiful oil painting of a seascape quite some years ago at a yard sale in Uxbridge, MA. I was told it was an "original" at the time. It has a signature of Winslow on it. I did a little bit of research after and found out that he was born in uxbridge, ma and spent time in New England and lived until 1910. Is this a Homer Winslow original or is there another Winslow that it could be? It is in an older frame, etc.

The year next to his signature appears to be 1871. I have tried looking for this original painting just to see what it is called and I can't find it. The closest one is "noon recess" because it is similar and depicts a classroom with a teacher and students. Any advice? Thanks. Sandy

I once lived in Tarpon Springs, fl. in a old 'fisherman's shack'. On the wall were two pencil drawings of fishing ships tied up on a dock in Key West. the prints were signed: Winslow Homer. I just often wondered where they came from and if they were mass produced or not. My friends told me the shack burned down a few years after I left. Anybody have any info about the prints? Thanks

Homer's 1870's work
Mary Webb (08/03/2001)
"Winslow Homer and the Critics"--an exhibit now on tour--treats the fierce criticism under which he fell during the 1870's. Although now difficult to believe anyone could criticize a Homer, many crtics did for his loose and long brushwork, as he built his pictures with color and not by the more widely accepted detailed draughtsmanship--draughtsmanship for which he became known during his work during the Civil War. I hope those who have seen the show will post their reflections on the subject.

gathering berries,1870
penny (07/29/2001)
I have a kind of board engraving or etching of Winslow Homers Gathering Berries. This is signed by or engraved by Lagardi (its hard to read) The picture is opposite to the painting so I think it was used in Harpers Weekly as away to print picture in magazine or newspaper. It has brown ink in the cruves and on the back. I really want to know what exactly I have or where to find out about what I have. Thank you.

Bill Gates and Winslow Homer
Mary Webb (04/21/2001)
On May 5, 1998 CNN,Reuters, the NY Times, and the AP Press posted the story of Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and his payment of a record $30 million for the last major seascape by Winslow Homer "Lost on the Grand Banks." Gates purchased the painting -- 32 inches tall and 50 inches wide -- at supposed "private" sale. The oil painting is dated 1885 and depicts two fishermen in peering over the side of their boat in a stormy sea. John Spoor Broome, a businessman from Southern California, was described as the seller who had bought the painting from his grandmother in the 1940s. This is the highest price ever paid for an American painting!
